Abstract
On May 18 2017, the IASB published a new accounting standard for insurance contracts; IFRS 17. This new standard dictates an overhaul of the accounting system for insurance companies and its aim is to harmonize accounting practices in order to improve the transparency and consistency of the accounts. For insurance and reinsurance companies, the stakes exceed the purely accounting side since this standard will result in important changes in terms of financial communication of insurance and reinsurance contracts. This dissertation aims to deal with the main stakes of reinsurance held in the light of the amendments published by the IASB on June 25 2020. In particular, when a group of insurance contracts is onerous, the standard requires to recognize immediately a loss in profit and loss. The amendments are a way to recognize an initial gain in order to compensate for this loss if, when subscribing underlying insurance contracts, a reinsurance contract is covering them. An application on quota-share treaty on a funeral portfolio is made on a group of profitable contracts and then on a group of onerous contracts. Concerning the profitable ones, the study compares the speed at which a result is recognized according to the choice of adopted coverage units for the amortization of the contractual service margin. With the onerous ones, the study compares a few methods of amortization of the loss recovery component to evaluate the impact on the result. The objective is therefore to identify the approaches that allow the best smoothing of the result of reinsurance for both groups of contracts.
