Abstract
Until recently, motorcycle insurance was a niche market that attracted only very specialized companies. Today, the dynamic of new motorcycle sales is leading to the emergence of new insurers on the market, which is now facing increased competition. As a result, insurers must continually review their pricing strategy and segmentation to be able to propose rates that reflect both the insured risk and remain attractive compared to the competition. The objective of this dissertation is to propose a strategy for updating insurance rates while reconciling two concepts of the commercial premium: the technical pricing of the underlying risk and the global insurance market positioning. This update will be made taking into consideration the constraint of an equivalent rating structure. We are therefore not interested in integrating new variables into the actual ratebook nor in a complete redo. Through this study we wish to answer two questions: • Which segments require rate adjustment? • How much should the commercial premium be adjusted to improve the competitiveness of the product and / or the mix of the portfolio without degrading the loss ratio? This thesis is mainly divided into five chapters. The first two chapters present the context of the study and expose the methodology used for modeling based on machine learning techniques. The third chapter is devoted to the analysis and the modeling of the customer demand while the fourth aims to estimate their expected profitability. To do this, we will introduce the concept of Expected Loss Ratio, one of the KPIs used for insurance portfolio management. We will go into details about its calculation which is based on the complete overhaul of pure premium models by warranties. Finally, the last chapter will present the strategy for adjusting the commercial premium based on the joint analysis of the two indicators calculated above as well as the results obtained while applying this strategy. Key words motorcycle insurance, conversion rate, pure premium, commercial pricing, third party liability, Expected Loss Ratio, gradient boosting, LASSO, variable selection
