Abstract
Insurance companies are highly regulated. Among the various constraints they are subject to, they must respect the Solvency Capital Requirement (SCR) resulting from the first pillar of Solvency II. The market SCR is difficult to calculate because, unlike assets, liabilities are not easily valued by closed formulas. In order to approximate the Best Estimate Liabilities (BEL), AXA France uses the replicating portfolio method. This method consists in determining a set of financial instruments that can be easily valued, can replicate the BEL and have the same behavior in response to different market shocks. The calibration of replicating portfolios can be divided into two sub-problems: the choice of instruments used to replicate the BEL on the one hand, and the calculation of the associated nominal amounts on the other. The current method of instrument selection, based on expert judgement, is very time consuming. The objective of this paper is to reduce the time spent on the selection of financial instruments. The automation using a genetic algorithm is considered. This choice is justified by the significant quantity of financial instruments candidates forming the database. The genetic algorithm also has the advantage of proposing a set of potential solutions and not a single solution as the most common algorithms would provide. Several candidate portfolios can thus be compared. In a reasonable execution time, the algorithm manages to produce individuals verifying the performance criteria but the number of instruments remains above the threshold of 50. In order to further reduce the size of the replicating portfolio without increasing the execution time, two additional algorithms have been implemented: they reduce the number of instruments by increasing the key performance indicators.
